My objective was to create a kinetic typography motion graphic video using Glass Animals’ “Space Ghost Coast to Coast” from the beginning of the song up to the first chorus. This would provide an opportunity for me to showcase my preferred skill of typography motion graphic styling, which I aim to develop further for future projects.
PROJECT GOAL
The aim of this project is to demonstrate my ability to translate the message, theme, and aesthetic of an audio-centric medium, such as music, into a visually captivating motion graphic video. I plan to achieve this by creating a video that is visually appealing and captures the essence of Glass Animals’ “Space Ghost Coast to Coast” up until the first chorus.
CREATIVE PROCESS
To start, I watched several music videos by Glass Animals to gain a better understanding of their storytelling style and aesthetic. Next, I examined their music album covers and used them to create a mood board that helped me establish a color palette and overall visual aesthetic for my project. In addition, I aimed to pay homage to the 1994 Space Ghost cartoon by incorporating the original Space Ghost character into my video. To achieve this, I wanted the video to have a cartoony, nostalgic feel with an overall exaggerated vibe.
Once I had assembled my mood board, I began brainstorming the various effects that I wanted to apply to my text in After Effects. Concurrently, I started sketching out a rough storyboard to help guide my project.
With my rough storyboard in hand, I then created an image of a prisoner in Ibis Paint X and gathered my remaining assets to animate. Once I had all my assets together, I proceeded to bring everything together in my After Effects composition, experimenting with different placements and backgrounds until I found the my desired combinations.
